Governor General Peter Von Scholten issued the emancipation proclamation on July 3rd, 1848, thereby freeing all slaves in the then Danish West Indies. But let us not forget Moses “Budhoe” Gottlieb, the great Virgin Islands Liberator. Budhoe, a free slave, was the leader of a planned rebellion.
