5 Tips for Traveling to St. John US Virgin Islands

The US Virgin Islands is a wonderful place to visit. As a Territory of the United States, American travelers can enjoy the no hassle, no passport necessary, ease of traveling. They can use their favorite airlines such as Delta, American, even Jet Blue and many others. Upon arrival, they don't have to worry about currency exchanges because the US Dollar is used. There are so many conveniences associated with traveling to the US Virgin Islands.

St. John, as one of the smaller US Virgin Islands, is even more secluded than the larger islands because it has no major airport. Thus, the only access to St. John is by sea. Here are some tips for traveling to St. John. If you have already experienced the uniqueness of this hidden gem, then feel free to share some tips of your own.
  1. Visit the online USVI Travel Portal to stay up to date with requirements for entering the Territory.
  2. Since St. John can only be accessed by sea, book your ferry ride more than 3 days in advance.
  3. Remember to drive on the left. This is a remnant of our Danish colonial times. But it is all we have ever known. So be careful and stay left. Also while driving, slow down. We have winding roads, steep hills, and wild donkeys.
  4. Say good morning, good afternoon, and in general be respectful, it will go a long way with the locals and you will truly experience the love in Love City.
  5. Wear sunscreen, be safe and have fun!

Dear Beloved Community,
We hope that our note finds you well and practicing social distancing to the best of your capacity. We understand that COVID-19 is currently a pandemic that can threaten our health and infrastructure. As Virgin Islanders, we would like to do our best to “flatten the curve” and slow the spread of this virus in our area. We hope that you will join us in doing so. We will remain in operation insofar as the ports are open because we are well aware of the critical importance of car ferries in providing food, fuel, water, etc to residents of St. John.
The health of our community is dependent on our willingness to act in the interest of the whole. Therefore we are all tasked with the following:
  1. Our passenger lounge on the M/V Grand Vic is closed until further notice. Refreshments are still available for purchase, a crew member can assist you.
  2. Access to the wheelhouse is strictly off limits to anyone except crew.
  3. Please remain in your vehicle while riding the vessel. We will not stop you from exiting your vehicle, but you assume the risk.
  4. If you are canceling a trip to the territory, call our office during business hours and/or send us an email. We are happy to process your refund and look forward to seeing you on any trips that you may take to STT/STJ in the future.
  5. Please follow our social media pages for updates. We may abridge our schedule in the near future.
In love and solidarity always,
