Memorial Day Facts

Memorial Day is the day that we memorialize those who bled and died while still in military service or as a result of wounds sustained during their time of service. It's distinct from Veteran's Day because Veteran's Day honors all Veterans living or dead, whether they served in war time or times of peace. At 3:00 pm local time, the national moment of remembrance, let us take a moment to thank those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We are forever grateful.

• The common red field poppy (Papaver rhoeas) is a symbol of Memorial Day;
• Memorial Day began as a result of the Civil War;
• On May 5, 1868 Major General John A. Logan issued General Orders NO. 11 set aside May 30, 1868 for decorating the graves of the fallen;
• Memorial Day was first called Decoration Day;
• President Ulysses S. Grant presided over the first Memorial Day ceremony;
• The National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 pm local time was established by Congress in 2000.
