'Known as a counter celebration to the infamous Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples’ Day is now celebrated in many parts of the Americas. Many now recognize the fact that Christopher Columbus murdered and enslaved the people he found in this hemisphere of the world.
As West Indians and Virgin Islanders, many of us have Indigenous heritage and ancestry. As a result, we celebrate today October 14, 2019 as Indigenous Peoples' Day and we commemorate the contributions and sacrifices of the Caribs, Arawaks, Taino, Ciboney and all of the original people of our beloved Virgin Islands and their descendants.
