November 1st is Liberty Day also known as Bull and Bread Day in honor of the late and great Virgin Islander, David Hamilton Jackson.

Mr. Jackson fought for our rights on many fronts. He was a civil rights activist, labor leader, judge, newspaper editor and so much more. Traveling as far as Denmark as a tireless advocate for local rights while we were under the Danish flag, he organized the territory’s first free newspaper and its first labor union. His efforts for equality for his people did not stop when we were transferred to American rule; he also lobbied for US citizenship.

One has to wonder what he would do if he was alive today. Nevertheless we continue to pay him homage by remembering his legacy and striving to emulate his love for his home and its people.
