Do you need a cup of coffee on St. John and don't know where to go? Try Java'Mon Coffee at Gallows Point Gift & Gourmet and grab an "IRIE feelin."
This eclectic coffee/gift shop is owned and operated by Brian and Mindy Cunningham. This power couple started the Java'Mon brand by merging their passions. She is a coffee aficionado and he is a lover of reggae music. What they both have in common is their love of Caribbean culture but most particularly, their love of St. John. Not only were they engaged but they were also married on this tropical oasis. Brian indicates that after visiting St. John for well over 12 years, they decided to invest in the island. The Java'Mon Coffee brand captures the uniqueness of St. John's vibe: its purity, its simplicity, its niceness, in short its "IRIE feelin." When compared to national coffee chains, this brand offers customers an appreciation of the simple life by fostering a casual relaxed environment wherein you will enjoy a premium brand of coffee. Though there is a signature blend, most other blends are named after the bays of St. John based on the vibe of that particular beach. Reggae music is a big part of the overall atmosphere and this relaxed vibe comes across even in its packaging. When asked which Reggae artist inspires him the most, Brian indicated that though he admires Bob Marley as the God Father of Reggae, he actually likes all Reggae music from old school Peter Tosh to Dance Hall, International Reggae and even Brazilian and Hawaiian Reggae. Reggae music and coffee are not the only passions of Brian and Mindy, they are also very passionate about education. They have given to both public and private schools on St. John and are involved in educational pursuits internationally. So when you feel like having coffee and you don't feel like extending the corporate vibe beyond your 9-5, visit Java'Mon Coffee Shop at Gallows Point Gift & Gourmet. And I know, I have been using that word vibe often; if you don't know what it means just ask da Java'Mon when you visit the shop. If you have not been to St. John, you are in for a treat. St. John has a repertoire of stores, shops, eateries, activities, that very much remind one of the charm of island living. We would like to highlight some of these places in an ongoing series called Highlights of St. John. With this in mind, we introduce you to Chateau Bordeaux.
Chateau Bordeaux has stood the test of time. Restaurant owner, manager, and Chef, Ms. Lorelei Monsanto indicates that the restaurant has been in existence for almost 40 years. Lorelei inherited the restaurant from her Mom, Ms. Wilma Monsanto. When asked about her feelings as a restauranteur, Lorelei indicated that though the restaurant business is challenging, it is still quite rewarding because you get to meet wonderful people from all over the world, many of whom come back year after year. It is a pleasure to serve both repeat and new customers. In addition, Lorelei loves being an entrepreneur and thereby experiencing the joys of business ownership. In addition to Chateau Bordeaux, Lorelei volunteers as President of the VI Unity Day Group and as a Rotarian. Both volunteer activities have allowed her to give back to her community. When you come to St. John, if you visit Chateau Bordeau remember to ask for Lorelei. She will excite your palate with samplings of French Caribbean Cuisine and various local drinks, of particular interest is a drink called The Dirty Monkey. Chateau Bordeau offers local flavor with an award winning view. Keep in mind however, that those who come and eat are the ones to enjoy the view as the restaurant is not merely a photographic destination. The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch during season and off season (June 1st to September 30th) it is open for lunch only.
